Apologies for slacking with my posts over the past 10 days or so. I was out in Amsterdam for Appelsap festival & it’s taken me longer than usual to get back into my groove. A whole array of new music has dropped since my last post so I’ve decided to highlight 5 fire tunes to make up for the lost time.
Gucci Mane – I Get The Bag Ft. Migos
Gucci Mane surprised fans this past Friday by announcing his 11th studio album Mr. Davis, while also premiering the 2nd single of the project I Get The Bag featuring hip hop’s favourite group; Migos. Since his release from prison in May 2016, La Flare has shown absolutely no signs of slowing down, churning out release after release like a man who’s desperate to make up for lost time in any & every way possible. Gucci has released SEVEN projects, including collaborative LPs with Zaytoven, Future & Lil Uzi Vert in the 15 months since his release and Mr. Davis serves as the follow-up to May’s Drop Top Wop, which was released collaboratively alongside super producer Metro Boomin. The 17-track album will feature Big Sean, The Weeknd, Schoolboy Q, A$AP Rocky, Slim Jxmmi, Young Dolph, Ty Dolla $ign, Monica, Rico Love & Chris Brown who also handled hook duties on the lead single Tone It Down. Migos absolutely bodied today’s FTOD, with Quavo once again providing another standout hook to add to his impressive collection. Listen to the fire tune below.
Yxng Bane – Rihanna
UK artist Yxng Bane has seen his stock steadily rise over the past 12 months primarily due to his hit Fine Wine featuring Kojo Funds, which continues to enjoy steady airplay a year after its release. The Disturbing London artist recently released his latest single Rihanna, which is a fire tune by all accounts and will be in my personal playlist rotation for the foreseeable future. Listen to the fire tune below.
Chip – Confirmed
Chip finally released his highly anticipated third studio album League Of My Own II on August 11th to very positive reviews. It’s his best album to date in my opinion & automatically slots into my top 10 albums of the year so far; trust me it’s that good. Chip had previously released Gets Like That Ft. Ghetts , 34 shots & the summer standout Honestly Ft. 67, as part of the album’s rollout but each song sounds even better as part of the album. The 17 track album, which debuted at no.12 on the Official UK album chart pretty much has no skippable records in my opinion & proves that the Tottenham MC is undoubtedly at the top of his game right now. Stefflon Don – Hurtin’ Me Ft. French Montana
U.K. rapper Stefflon Don released her first official single since signing to Polydor records this two weeks ago titled Hurtin’ Me featuring Mr. Unforgettable French Montana. Stefflon Don initially burst onto the mainstream last year with the infectious Real Ting, which sounded like nothing I’d ever heard from a UK rapper before. It was braggadocious & catchy at the same time and provided a great introduction into her artistry for the casual listener. She followed that up by dropping the impressive Real Ting mixtape in December last year which included the afrobeat influenced Envy Us featuring Abracadabra. Hurtin’ Me shows off Stefflon Don’s versatility & I expect big things from here over the coming years. Listen to the fire tune below.
Dave East – Perfect Ft. Chris Brown
Recent Def Jam signee & East Harlem native Dave East released his debut studio album Paranoia: A True Story this past Friday, which includes the standout song Perfect featuring the hook connoisseur Chris Brown. I first listened to Dave East when a friend put me on to his Hate Me Now mixtape in 2015 and this man’s unique selling point is clearly his bars! I was very impressed with what I heard & he subsequently followed this up with Kairi Chanel in 2016, which is also the name of his daughter. He’s signed to Nas’ Mass Appeal label, which automatically enhances expectations regarding his pen game, which he continues to live up to and improve upon. Perfect marks an unexpected turn in his artistry & could potentially be seen as a strategy to make him more appealing to a female audience musically but the result is incredible & it’s one hell of a tune. Listen to the amazing FTOD below.
