Fire Tune Of The Day: Popcaan – My Story Ft. Davido

by Olu

Today’s FTOD is by dancehall legend Popcaan & afrobeats superstar Davido. The pair linked up in Jamaica last year while Davido was on vacation & this seems to be one of the fruits of the time they spent together. As genres go, dancehall & afrobeats have a synergy between them, which I believe is primarily driven by the emphasis on rhythm & the prominence of slang in both genres. Dancehall has always been relatively huge in Nigeria (I can’t speak for the whole of Africa) & it seems like afrobeats as a genre is gaining more traction in the Caribbean & globally. I’ve been a fan of Popcaan since I experienced the ‘Pocaan effect’ in Antigua five years ago because I heard ‘Party Shot’ & ‘Ravin’ literally everywhere I went to, so I’ve always expected big things from the Unruly General & this tune definitely does not disappoint. Davido on the other hand has been dominating the afrobeats genre 6 years alongside Wizkid and a handful of other artists. “OBO” as he is affectionately known in Nigeria, brought the perfect afrobeat element to the record and the result is a fire hybrid track called My Story.
